Black henbane was historically used in combination with other nightshade plants, such as mandrake and datura as an anaesthetic potion. Henbane was also used by the ancient Greeks, the plant, recorded as Herba Apollinaris, was used to yield oracles by the priestesses of Apollo.

In Medieval times henbane it won recognition for its part in the concoction of "flying potion".
