Hyoscyamus niger (Black henbane)
Black henbane was historically used in combination with other nightshade plants, such as mandrake and datura as an anaesthetic potion. Henbane was also used by the ancient Greeks, the plant, recorded as Herba Apollinaris, was used to yield oracles by the priestesses of Apollo.
In Medieval times henbane it won recognition for its part in the concoction of "flying potion".
Hyoscyamus niger was traditionally used in German beers as a flavouring, until the Bavarian Purity Law was passed in 1516 and outlawed the use of Henbane. Ethnologist speculate that the name Pilsner beer derives from the German word for henbane, Bilsenkraut.
